Newborn Photoshoot Preparation Guide
Hello, I'm Monika, your newborn photographer
Thank you for trusting me to preserve these early memories. The first days with your little one are full of wonder, beauty and a little chaos, and that is exactly what makes them yours.
This session is baby led and relaxed. Your baby can feed, cry, sleep or wriggle, and you do not need to pose or make everything perfect. I will gently guide you, follow your baby’s pace and take care of the rest.
These tips are here to help you feel prepared. Take what works for your family and ask me if you need any help before your session.
THE SESSION
This session is all about love, connection and real life. Your baby might feed, cry, sleep or wriggle, and that is completely normal.
Newborn lifestyle sessions focus on natural moments at home, and sometimes outdoors with your baby. We can use different rooms and settings, from the living room and bedroom to the nursery, garden or front door if the light is lovely.
Sessions usually last around one and a half to two hours. We have plenty of time for feeding, changing nappies and cuddles. Older children, grandparents and pets are welcome to join if you would like.
WHAT TO WEAR
Keep clothing comfortable, coordinated and simple. There is no need for everyone to match exactly.
- Choose gentle colours. Neutrals, earth colours, pastels and soft shades work beautifully.
- Add natural texture. Knits, linen and cotton create a timeless feel.
- Keep baby comfortable. Plain bodysuits, vests, soft wraps and natural-coloured blankets are lovely choices.
- Be prepared. Have extra outfits ready for little accidents.
- Choose comfort after birth. Loose clothing, a flowing dress or a soft top with jeans can all look beautiful.
- Ask me for help. Send me a photo of your outfit ideas if you would like a second opinion.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR HOME
Let go of the pressure for perfection. I am photographing your family in your home, not judging the home itself.
- Move or hide small distractions such as wires, mugs, bottles and laundry from the rooms we might use.
- A clean, neutral duvet cover and soft baby blankets are useful if we photograph on the bed.
- I will help adjust the room and move small things to find the best light.
The most important thing is that you feel relaxed. The photographs are about your family, not perfection.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR FAMILY
- Rest and eat where possible. A little food and rest helps everyone feel ready.
- Prepare spare outfits. Keep something fresh nearby for unexpected spills.
- Give hands, nails and feet a quick check. They often appear in close-ups.
- Keep expectations gentle. Toddlers, siblings and pets do not need to behave perfectly.
PROPS
You do not need props. The focus is always on your baby and your connection.
If you would like to include something meaningful, a blanket from a grandparent, a special toy, a family heirloom or a room decoration can add a personal touch. You do not need to buy anything specially for the session.
BEFORE I ARRIVE
- Feed your baby if they are ready. A full tummy can help a baby feel settled, but we will always follow their needs.
- Keep the room warm. Babies love warmth, especially when they are being photographed without many layers.
- Do not worry if the schedule changes. We will pause for feeds, nappy changes and cuddles whenever needed.
WHEN I ARRIVE
We will start by getting to know each other and your baby. If you like, I would love a quick tour of your home so we can find the best spots for photographs.
Then we will begin gently, following your baby’s pace. I will use two cameras to capture natural, joyful moments while you stay present with your family.
DURING YOUR SESSION
- Relax and enjoy your time together. These photographs will become cherished memories.
- Focus on your baby and each other. Snuggle up and be yourselves.
- Embrace the imperfections. Real interaction makes the most meaningful images.
- Follow your baby’s needs. We will take breaks for feeding, changing and cuddles.
- Do not worry about older children. I will work around their moods and energy.
- Have fun. I will guide you gently when needed, and you can simply enjoy these early days.
FINAL NOTES
- I am here to help, guide and make this easy.
- You do not need to pose or look at the camera all the time.
- These early days go quickly, so simply enjoy this time together.
