Spring beach family photoshoot in North East England

North East coast beach photoshoots are absolutely breathtaking! From sandy stretches to rugged rocky shores, romantic dunes, and charming lighthouses nearby, there’s no shortage of stunning locations. But, let’s talk about the coast’s unique weather quirks – always good to be prepared!

Even in the summertime, you’d think the weather would be predictable, right? Not quite! Take my recent shoot, for example. We planned for a sunny spring sunset with a picturesque lighthouse backdrop, envisioning those dreamy golden hour vibes at 6 PM.

But guess what? Newcastle was scorching hot! Yet, as soon as we arrived at the coast, we were met with thick fog – locals call it sea fret!  It’s a common thing here, especially during warmer months: clear skies just a stone’s throw away from the beach, but step onto the sand and you’re in a misty, chilly wonderland.

It was foggy and misty, giving the day a wonderfully romantic and dramatic feel. The fog was so thick, there wasn’t much chance of sunny photos with St Mary’s Lighthouse in the background. The weather certainly surprised us, but we still captured some sweet, emotion-filled family portraits right in the heart of Whitley Bay

Sea fret- foggy weather around North East England coast

A “sea fret” is a type of mist or fog that often rolls in along the North East coast of England, especially during the warmer months. It’s caused when warm air passes over the cold North Sea, creating a thick, low-lying fog that drifts inland. You’ll typically see it in places like Tynemouth, Whitley Bay, and further along the coast. It can make the coast feel quite mysterious, with everything suddenly hidden in a grey haze. Sometimes, a sea fret can make a sunny day turn unexpectedly chilly, so it’s always good to have a jacket handy if you’re heading to the beach! It can come and go quickly, but on some days, it might stick around for hours. Locals are quite used to it, and it adds to the unique character of the region’s seaside atmosphere, making for dramatic and moody photographs.
